in Munich.Data, systems and code are the chosen media of Mario Klingemann (aka Quasimondo). A key figure in the development of artworks using artificial intelligence, Klingemann employs algorithms and neural networks across a body of work which encompasses AI-powered image generation, interactive experiences and performative sculpture. Physical objects are also present, with wooden furniture items and vintage-inspired machinery forming part of the German artist’s installations. Our relationship with visual imagery, language and technology is addressed by Klingemann, whose practice explores the notion of the machine as a partner, an active collaborator perhaps able to trigger new ideas both for the artist and audiences.
Mario Klingemann was born in Laatzen, Germany, and currently resides in Munich. Self taught as a coder, Klingemann has experimented with the artistic uses of emerging technologies throughout his career. He was Google Artist in Residence 2015-2018 and has received numerous prizes including the British Library Labs Artistic Award (2016), the Lumen Prize Gold Award (2018) and an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica (2020). His work has been shown in group exhibitions across the globe, including Centre Pompidou Paris, HEK Basel, the Hermitage Museum St. Petersburg and ZKM Karlsruhe, and features in collections including Colección SOLO (Madrid, Spain), The Outpost Art Organisation (Hanoi, Vietnam) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK).

“I don’t see the machine as a collaborator in the traditional sense. It needs to be an equal partner in the creative dialogue. Instead, it’s a sophisticated system that I interact with, probe, and manipulate to achieve my artistic vision.” – Mario Klingemann
