in Sardinia.Landscape, still-life and portraiture are revisited by the Italian artist, Siro Cugusi, whose paintings on canvas and paper depict alternative worlds unlimited by reason. Surrealist notions of the uncanny, echoes of Renaissance art and recognisable symbolism come together in dream-like scenes in which figurative and abstract elements are carefully balanced. Cugusi’s large formats lend an experiential quality to his works, while his gestural brushwork, luminous colour palette and innovative use of perspective bring dynamism and a sense of expectation. Described by the artist as “not so much a picture, but a state of thoughts and feelings,” Cugusi’s visual poems invite the viewer to embrace a reality beyond logic.
Siro Cugusi was born in Sardinia in 1980, where he currently resides. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari, completing an MFA in 2004 before moving to Paris. He was awarded a residency at Lux Art Institute, California, in 2017 and has hosted solo exhibitions in New York, Copenhagen, Naples and Los Angeles, among others. His work is held by numerous collections, including the Lux Art Institute Museum (California, USA), Fondazione Coppola (Vicenza, Italy) and Colección SOLO (Madrid, Spain). His first individual museum presentation was held at the Museo Nivola (Sardinia, Italy) in 2024.
